Mikimoto Kokichi was born 1858 in Toba-cho, Mie prefecture. After working as a peddler, he began pearl cultivation. In 1905, he finally succeeded in cultivating a spherical pearl. He immediately began exporting these under the name of “Mikimoto Pearl,” the name which obtained the world-wide recognition.
