To catch a cruising taxi

In the central Tokyo area, you can easily catch a taxi on the street. Look for one with a red light lit on the lower left of the windshield. The red light means that the taxi is free. Raise your hand to an empty taxi and it will stop right in front of you. Taxi doors are automated. Take one step back and wait for the door to be opened by the driver. Tell the driver where you want to go. Most of the Japanese taxi drivers can speak only Japanese. It is advisable that you have your destination written down on a piece of paper or have a map ready. When you arrive at the destination, pay the taxi fare before you get out of the taxi and wait for the door to be opened by the driver. No tips are expected. If you call a taxi in a restaurant or other places, there will be an extra charge. You can get a taxi at a taxi stand in front of a railway station, etc.
