この度、加島美術では、「前衛書」の先駆者、比田井南谷展を開催いたします。
あまりにも先進的な彼の作品は、時代に解されることなく、やがて埋もれてしまいました。当時既に、書芸術のフィールドとして日本のみならず世界を見据えていた彼は、1950年以降その足場をアメリカに置き、アメリカ抽象表現主義者達との交流を持ち、互いに刺激を与えあいます。
彼が自身の思想を形にせんと行きついたのは、―文字を書かない書―。
それを「心線作品」と呼び、毛筆で表現しきれる限りの未知の造形物を創り出しました。下図から丁寧に構成される毛筆の造形は、まさに絵画的ですが、その原点には約三千年続いてきた書の歴史があります。伝承性や着想を具現化する確固たる技術力、芸術作品に必要な要素を毛筆で表現した作品は、今日の前衛書の想像をはるかに超えています。彼は、終戦後発表した「電のヴァリエーション」の英題を–Lightning–としています。中国古典書にあった「電」の一字に惹かれた事は偶然だったとしても、それは、先の未来を予知していたかのようです。是非、会場にてこの未知なる創造物をご覧いただけましたら幸いにございます。

NANKOKU - Exhibition of Hidai Nankoku
“Is this calligraphy or painting?!”
Nankoku’s works were too advanced to be understood at the time, and have fallen into oblivion later on. The artist already considered the world as his area of activity in calligraphy by late 1940s, and he moved to the US in 1950. Nankoku interacted with abstract painting artists there and they stimulated and inspired each other.
Nankoku eventually found the way to realize his idea. It was “Calligraphy not to write a letter”. He called it a “Spirit Line” work and produced pieces like abstract paintings. “Spirit Line” works do seem to be pictorial artworks, however, they have been created based on the tradition of calligraphy over 3000 years. Nankoku’s outstanding skill in calligraphy and extraordinary idea for creation made it possible to produce artworks which have been never seen before. We hope that you would come to see the show and enjoy an opportunity to experience works by the artist considered as “the father of contemporary calligraphy”.
